another friend answered:

I believe in both and have done quite a lot of research on the subject of how the two can work together.
.
e.g. IF god exists, its quite obvious he built this universe according to certain rules. These rules don’t necessarily apply to god any more than the rules of a board game apply to its inventor, but these rules probably tell us something about god. Such as, he likes order not chaos, he likes variety not monotony, he wants his creatures to understand beauty, etc.
.
Many people believe that the rules of the universe are strong evidence that something “made” this universe. I am inclined to agree simply on the basis of some fundamentals of chaos theory. Namely that by and large, order doesn’t generally flow from chaos (without guidance), something doesn’t generally arise out of nothing (without guidance), distinction doesn’t generally rise out of generality (without guidance), etc.
.
Of course, no one can know for sure outside of faith, so (from a scientific point of view) we must simply see where the most evidence suggests and follow it to its rational conclusion.

…sorry, couldn’t stop myself….and I’m just warming up!

i think its possible to believe in both… its possible to believe in some kind of order or rules which govern how things interact but at the same to believe that those rules are only a small part of a larger picture. i suppose it depends on how u imagine god. i like to think in terms of energy – it sounds a bit new age but everythin in the universe is made up of the same things… i think there’s something kind of spiritual about that…
